SALT LAKE CITY — Police used pepper spray and a Taser before arresting a man suspected of robbing a 7-Eleven early Friday.

About 12:10 a.m., an intoxicated man gathered drinks from shelves at the convenience store, 109 S. 300 East, and attempted to leave without paying, Salt Lake police detective Dennis McGowan said.

A store clerk got in front of the man as he tried to leave and asked him to pay. The man shoved the clerk to the floor, got in a waiting vehicle and left, McGowan said. The clerk provided police with a description of the vehicle, and officers stopped the vehicle a short time later.

Police say the man was combative and uncooperative despite multiple commands to comply. Officers attempted to subdue the man with pepper spray but it had little effect on him, possibly because he was intoxicated, McGowan said. At that point, officers deployed a Taser on the man, who then complied.

Sidney Jake, 21, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of robbery, criminal mischief and interference with an arresting officer.
