MONTICELLO — The search was expected to resume Monday morning for five overdue backpackers.
A group of men and women from out of state had been backpacking in the Elk Ridge/Dark Canyon recreation area west of Monticello for several days, said Jeremy Hoggard with the San Juan County Sheriff's Office.
Sunday was the day they were supposed to return home. When family members didn't hear from them, they called the sheriff's office, he said.
The group was reported missing about 3:45 p.m. Sunday. Crews searched on the ground until dark, Hoggard said.
Additional information will be added as it becomes available and when the search resumes Monday.
