ST. GEORGE — Dixie State University will go tobacco free next year after the school's board of trustees voted unanimously Friday for a campus-wide ban beginning Jan. 1.

The new policy prohibits the use of all tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes and hookahs, in all campus areas, both indoor and outdoor.

Approval of the tobacco ban came after a three-year study by Dixie nursing students Joe Pate and James Seely, officials said. The study included input from the student body, faculty and staff, as well of an examination of the policy's impact.

"We applaud the combined efforts of Joe and Jimmy throughout this entire student-run initiative,” Del Beatty, Dixie's dean of students, said in a prepared statement. “The tobacco-free policy was created from input provided by every constituency on our campus. This policy will make Dixie State a cleaner and healthier environment for all who call our campus home.”

The school plans to launch a marketing campaign in the coming weeks to educate the campus community on the new policy.

“We appreciate the opinions of all stakeholders on campus," Board of Trustees Chairman Steven Caplin said in a prepared statement. "It was vital for us to listen, and I think what you’ve seen today is that the board has listened and carefully factored in that input. I want to thank all the stakeholders for their foresight and their effort to make this happen.”
