SALT LAKE CITY — A "wanted federal fugitive" was taken into custody Friday night after a car chase.

Lt. Kent Stokes from West Valley City Police said that about 8 p.m. Friday night on, 4800 S. 500 West, an officer spotted a stolen vehicle from a "hot list" that is distributed to police.

Stokes said that once the officer confirmed that the vehicle was stolen, he attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver began to flee. The officer pursued and radioed for assistance.

The alleged suspect drove down 300 West then onto the south frontage road of 4500 South where a TRAX train was coming through, Stokes said. But the driver broke through the lowered safety arm and continued west.

Stokes said the driver crashed into a parked car and attempted to flee on foot, but several officers were able to lock down a perimeter and apprehend the alleged suspect on the 300 West, I-15 off-ramp.

"He resisted arrest there on the ramp, and he was tased and taken into custody," Stokes said.

Stokes said that the alleged suspect was a "well-known suspect in the valley" named Jerry Joseph Romero. He is also a "wanted federal fugitive" who also has "warrants for fleeing," Stokes said.
