WEST JORDAN — One football coach at Copper Hills High School in West Jordan has been fired and the head coach was suspended.

Grizzlies head coach John Teuscher was suspended two games. His offensive line coach John Cullen was relieved of his duties by Copper Hills Principal Todd Quarnberg.

Teuscher had a brief meeting with his team and their parents in the school's gymnasium Wednesday night.

The message did not address why his assistant coach was fired or why he was suspended.

The meeting lasted four minutes and it was still unclear why two coaches have been locked out.

Parents like Chris Munsey, father of a junior wide receiver for the Grizzlies, said they left the meeting confused.

"I didn't get much information," Munsey said.

Munsey said he had hoped Teuscher would address why Cullen was fired. He now feels the lingering questions could be worse for the team.

"I just am concerned that it's going to be a big distraction for them going forward," Munsey said.

The Utah High School Activities Association — which cannot fire a coach — said they received a complaint from officials after Friday's Copper Hills game against Teuscher.

They issued a one game suspension and school administrators tacked on another game.

As for Cullen, Jordan School District Spokeswoman Sandy Riesgraf would not elaborate on specifics why he was fired.

"They decided that they needed to hold not only coaches, but players to a higher level of standards when it comes to sportsmanship," Riesgraf said.

Copper Hills Principal Todd Quarnberg said he supports his coach and the staff.

"Every program has hiccups as you instigate change," Quarnberg said. "Every decision my coach and I will make will be to move students and staff toward improving and becoming better than society believes they can become."
