SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah's S.J. Quinney College of Law turned 100 years old Friday. School officials held a symposium and gala in celebration of the milestone.
Friday's symposium was held Friday from noon to 2 p.m. in the College of Law's Sutherland Moot Courtroom. Former Utah law professor and U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Micheal McConnell served as the keynote speaker, which featured the college's most influential scholarship during the last hundred years.
An evening gala followed the symposium at the Natural History Museum of Utah.
"We are immensely proud of the contributions made by the College of Law and its alumni during our first century and it's time to celebrate those achievements," interim Dean Bob Adler said in a prepared statement earlier in the week. "As we look forward to the completion of our innovative new home in 2015, it's only fitting that we also honor the people who have shaped the college and its legacy of excellence in legal education, service to the community and engaged scholarship."
Founded in 1913, the law school first occupied a space in the Salt Lake City and County Building before moving to the Park Building on the U. campus in 1914. It later moved to its current location in 1963 and was renamed in honor of S.J. "Joe" Quinney in 2001 after receiving an endowment from the S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney Foundation.
In June, officials broke ground on a new home for the law school, located adjacent to Rice-Eccles Stadium at the southwest entrance to the U.
The S.J. Quinney College of Law was ranked 41st in the most recent U.S. News and World Report rankings of law schools in the country. It tied with the law colleges of George Mason University and the University of Maryland and ranked just ahead of its Utah County rival, the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University.
