KANE COUNTY — The bodies of a California couple were discovered Thursday morning in a popular hiking area in Kane County.

A group of hikers reported finding the body of a female while returning from a hike to "The Wave" around 8:45 a.m., according to Kane County officials. The hikers located the body a short distance from the trail under a tree.

A medical helicopter was dispatched from Page, Ariz. to pick up the body. The female victim was flown to a site near "The Wave" trailhead. On the return trip to the scene to pick up Kane County officials, a second body was seen from the helicopter.

The body of an elderly man was located around 750 feet from where the female had been found along the hiking trail. Officials identified the deceased couple as Ulrich Wahli, 70, and Patricia Wahli, 69. The Wahlis are residents of Campbell, Calif.

The Wahlis had been hiking in temperatures over 100 degrees, and were believed to have died as a result of the heat Wednesday afternoon, according to emergency officials. Emergency responders believe that Patricia was sitting under a tree to cool down and that Ulrich may have been hiking away to find assistance.

The bodies were transferred to the Utah State Medical Examiner's Office. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
