LINDON — The city of Lindon is warning residents to boil water after finding E. coli bacteria in the culinary drinking water Friday.
Friday morning, a routine test of the city's culinary water system tested positive for E. coli bacteria. No illnesses had been reported as of 2 p.m. Officials are telling Lindon residents to boil water from the system for at least one minute before drinking, washing themselves, or brushing their teeth.
E. coli can cause nausea, diarrhea, cramps, among other symptoms and poses a greater risk to infants, young children, the elderly and people with compromised immune systems. Anyone with symptoms are told to report them to a doctor.
Chief Cody Cullimore of Lindon City Police said officials are trying to determine how the water became infected. Public works crews were flushing the system Friday afternoon.
The city and police used social media and reverse 911 calls to alert residents of the risk, and told residents to watch the police department's Twitter and the city's Facebook page.
