SPANISH FORK — A man charged with driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol appeared in court Tuesday, as the mother and daughter injured in the crash that led to his arrest recover from serious injuries.

Just after 8 a.m. on March 21, Lindsay Dyches and her daughter, Presley, were driving on state Route 198 near 8500 South from their Salem home to the girl's school. Aaron Moorman, travelling the opposite direction, crossed his van into the wrong lane of traffic and struck them in their Nissan sedan, the Utah Highway Patrol reported.

"It was like any other day I was bringing her to school," Dyches said. "I remember him coming right in front of me, and I remember screaming and thinking, ‘I am going to get hit.' That is all I remember."

Paisley, 7, was transported to the hospital by medical helicopter with extensive injuries. Her liver was lacerated and spine cracked from the force of the collision. Dyches, 36, was taken to an area hospital with a broken arm, ankle and three ribs.

"It was really scary," Dyches said. "I knew she was really bad shape, especially when they said they needed LifeFlight, and it really, really hit me hard."

It has been six weeks since the accident. The Dyches continue to recover, not only from their physical injuries, but the emotional wounds of being hit by a drunk driver, they said.

"It's devastating. We were very, very lucky," Dyches said.
