MURRAY — A man allegedly target shooting in his back yard was arrested Saturday night after barricading himself in a home that contained a possible marijuana grow site.

Police responded to reports of shots fired in a Murray neighborhood at about 7 p.m., according to a probable cause statement. Officers heard shots coming from the 7614 S. 1000 East as they arrived in the area.

Unified Police officers then saw a man walk from the back yard holding an "assault rifle" according to the statement. Officers identified themselves and told the man to drop his weapon, but he instead went inside, closed the doors and shut off the lights.

A SWAT team was called to the scene and was quickly able to get the man out of the home. The probable cause statement said the man appeared to be drunk.

A sweep of the home turned up "evidence of a marijuana grow" as well as drug paraphernalia and an almost empty bottle containing an alcoholic beverage, according to the document.

Officers also found a shooting target and .223 caliber shells casings in the back yard. The rifle's bullets made it into the yard of a neighbor, whose home was in the line of fire, according to the statement.

The man was arrested and booked into the Salt lake County Jail for investigation of possession of a controlled substance, reckless endangerment, possession of a weapon by a restricted person, discharge of a firearm within city limits, using a dangerous weapon while intoxicated, failure to stop at the command of an officer, possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct.
