OGDEN — A crash that injured two elderly women and a 12-year-old girl has prompted Ogden's mayor to look at crosswalk safety precautions in the area.
Saturday at 10:25 p.m., a 22-year-old male driver in a pickup truck struck the two women and girl while they crossed Washington Bouldevard near 24th Street. The group was just leaving Peery's Egyptian Theater after a film festival.
The women were using reflective orange flags to cross the street. The driver said he was distracted at the time of the crash.
"They tried to make themselves as visible as possible, and unfortunately, it just seems like he wasn't paying attention," said Ogden Mayor Mike Caldwell, who saw the crash.
The women suffered pelvic fractures. Both underwent surgery for their injuries. The girl was taken to Primary Children's Medical Center with a skull fracture, Ogden police said.
Though he doesn't know how much it contributed to the crash, Caldwell said the street lights across the street were out, making the dark night even darker.
The lamps were repaired the next morning and extra police patrols were out for the film festival the following night. An engineer will deliver a report of the malfunction to Caldwell within the next few days.
For as much foot traffic as the area gets at night, Caldwell said he would like to see additional safety measures in place for the future.
"We don't ever want an event like that," Caldwell said. "We want to do everything possible to avoid those types of things."
Ideally, the mayor would like to have overhead flashing lights installed above the crosswalks.
Police are still investigating the accident. So far the driver has not been charged or cited.
