ROY — A home in Roy was destroyed Wednesday after a fire that started in the garage spread throughout most of the house.
The Roy City Fire Department responded to the fire, located at 4894 S. 3650 W., at about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. The fire was originally called in as a car fire in the garage, but quickly spread to the home.
He said it is also important to remember to close the door, sealing the fire in the room for a time and buying firefighters time to fight it. Garage doors, which are fire rated, are especially important.
"If you close that door, that will give us a lot of time to get there and knock that fire down before it spreads into the home," he said.
The woman called 911, and firefighters said they could see smoke upon their approach, telling them the house had become involved. He said within minutes, 60–70 percent of the home was in flames.
Firefighters determined the fire was too far advanced to send firefighters into the house and fought it from the outside. It was contained in 15–20 minutes.
Lathem said the home is a total loss, with about $200,000 in damage. He was unsure of how many people were in the house at the time of the fire, but family members said everyone was safe.
"That's our main concern — life safety of the citizens, and, of course, all the firemen," Lathem said.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
