CHRISTMAS, Florida — Children digging in a Christmas, Florida yard found what appeared to be some type of grenade on Saturday afternoon.
According to WESH in Orlando, The Orange County Sheriff's Office bomb squad detonated the object around 5 p.m. and no one was injured.
Deputies said a second device was also found a short time after the blast and was blown up.
"It was a live grenade. Secondly, while they were disposing of the first one close by, they found a second hand grenade," said Paul Hopkins, of the Orange County Sheriff's Office.
A homeowner who asked to remain unnamed said his grandson picked up one of the grenades and brought it to him.
"(The children) didn't realize what they had. I looked at it and it was grenade from World War II. I figured it was one of those practice ones, though there might be a hole in it. There wasn't (a hole), so I took it outside, set it down and called 911," said the resident.
The call resulted in a three-foot hole in the homeowner's front yard after the bomb squad team detonated the grenade.
"In this case, thank goodness the kids weren't so curious as to want to pick up the grenade and actually pull the pin on it," Hopkins said.
