LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The International Olympic Committee has added an anti-discrimination clause to its host city contract, hoping to avoid a repeat of the turmoil caused at the Sochi Olympics when Russia passed a law prohibiting so-called gay "propaganda" before the Games.
IOC spokesman Mark Adams said the language is based on Principle 6 in the Olympic charter, which says any form of discrimination "is incompatible with belonging to the Olympic Movement."
International gay rights groups All Out and Athlete Ally were among those pushing the IOC to add the language to the host contract.
Andre Banks, executive director of All Out, celebrated the move, saying, "these new rules must prevent a replay of Sochi."
The groups are also urging the IOC to amend Principle 6 to specifically prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation or identity.
