BOISE, Idaho (AP) — Idaho's population has jumped to 1.63 million with the addition of 21,000 new residents in the last year. The U.S. Census Bureau yesterday pegged Idaho's population growth as measured in mid-2014 at just over 1.3 percent, ninth strongest in the nation. The agency says nearly 9,400 more people moved to Idaho from other states and countries than moved out. Nationally, the population grew 0.7 percent to nearly 319 million.
BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The latest earthquake swarm in central Idaho could help scientists better understand quake belts extending from Yellowstone National Park. The most recent swarm in the Challis area started this week and so far 20 quakes have been recorded, the largest a 3.7 magnitude on Monday. No damage has been reported. Scientist Mike Stickney of the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology based in Butte, Montana, says a portable seismograph left in place after a swarm last summer has helped pinpoint the earthquakes.
KETCHUM, Idaho (AP) — A central Idaho bus service plans to offer free late-night rides in the Ketchum and Sun Valley areas starting Friday. The Idaho Mountain Express reports that Mountain Rides Transportation Authority's "Night Owl" service will run until the bars close at 2 a.m. The city of Ketchum is paying $15,000 for the bus service in the ski and resort area that draws many tourists during the holiday season. The service is scheduled to run through Feb. 28.
SANDPOINT, Idaho (AP) — Bonner County officials and the developers of an upscale, fly-in housing development are asking for a jury trial after mediation and arbitration failed. The Bonner County Daily Bee reports that county officials and officials with Silverwing at Sandpoint filed the joint request last week. The trial would be held in U.S. District Court in Coeur d'Alene in April. Silverwing officials sued the county in May 2012 contending they hadn't been treated fairly.
