SALT LAKE CITY — When it comes home burglaries, there is no offseason. Burglars hit day and night all yearlong, and police say locking up your home may not be enough to keep bandits out.

KSL investigators teamed up with detectives from the Salt Lake City and Unified Police departments to show ways homeowners can enhance security and awareness about the crime.

Police said the most sought after burglary items are, jewelry, small electronics, laptops, cellphones and guns. And some of the worst places to keep valuables are on the nightstand, under mattress' and in the closet.

Burglars' Tricks

  • Case homes and neighborhood
  • Watch for occupants to leave a home
  • Knock at front door to determine if a house is unoccupied
  • Enter home through back doors and backyard windows
  • Hit master bedroom quickly to search for jewelry

Home Security Game Plan

  • Report suspicious cars or people in your neighborhood

  • Keep shrubs cut back from windows to limit hiding places
  • Use timers on lights and TVs to make it appear someone is home
  • Secure belongings in places other than a nightstand or mattress
