Skipper Coates

Name of Nominee: Skipper Coates
School: Eastmont Middle School
Grade: 9th Grade
Years Teaching: 4

Instead of lecturing and throwing review worksheets at her students, Mrs. Coates develops highly engaging, hands-on activities that teach key concepts. She provides fascinating, supplemental starfish and worm dissection labs. They learn about bacterial growth by swabbing articles around the school, mixing their own agar, and growing their own petri-dish bacteria cultures. She guides her students through an algebra exercise to calculate the likelihood we aren't alone in the universe. Using Bunsen burners, she shows her students how to determine the ingredients in different salts. To say that Mrs. Coates will have a lasting impact on students’ lives is an understatement!
