    Job Description

    JOB DESCRIPTION: COMMERCIAL TANNERY HIDE SHAVER (Part Time-evening) (Trainee to be considered) I. INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this position is to shave animal hides in preparation for commercial tanning operations. Hides will consist of North American Game, domestic animals, fur bearing animals, African animals, and Asian/Exotic animals. Hides will be either wet or dry tanned depending on customer demand. ll. MAJOR DUTIES: Applicant will be required to operate a commercial shaver approximately fourt hours per day. Will be required to produce a quality shaved hide within the time frames dictated by management. May be required to assist in other tannery operations as needed. May be required to provide on the job training for apprentice shavers. Will be required to take part in housekeeping/cleanup details. lll. OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS PERTAINING TO THIS POSITION: Applicant will share in the responsibility for a sound industrial safety and hazardous material program. Is required to comply with all applicable safety requirements. Unsafe conditions will be immediately reported to management. lV. QUALIFICATION STANDARDS: Applicant should have a minimum of one year shaving experience at a commercial tannery or equivalent. V. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES: Knowledge - Applicant should have full understanding of the tanning processes used in a commercial tannery. This includes stating the steps required in completing the tanning process; Re-hydration, bating, pickling, shaving, tanning, oiling and breaking of hides. The applicant is required to know how to tune (sharpen) the shaving blade during shaving operations and set up the guards on the shaver. Should know how to determine if a hide is shaved to the required thickness to allow for good stretch and tan adhesion. Should know what the term false cut is and how to avoid false cuts. Skills - Applicant should be able to demonstrate the techniques used in shaving a variety of animal hides as listed in the introduction prior to permanent hire status. Should be able to identify defects or flaws in hides that will impair the outcome of the hide and report these to management. Must be able to train apprentice shavers as required. Abilities - Applicant should be able to demonstrate shaving two deer capes in one hour or one elk cape in one hour with no holes cut thru the hide or false cuts prior to permanent hire status. Vl. ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicant will be required to stand for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. without assistance. Must have good hand/eye coordination. May be required to assist with general tasks outdoors under adverse climatic conditions.

    This is a contract position.

    Relocation costs may be covered.

    Requirements

    Must be 18 years of Age or older. Must provide own transportation. Hours are from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM M-F. No need to apply if not dependable or quality minded.
