Job Description
Patrols the total transit system, including facilities, within UTA service areas and provides a visible peace officer presence within those jurisdictions. Inspects rail systems for proof of fare and provides assistance to transit patrons as necessary always maintaining an active public safety presence. Monitors public behavior for violations of UTA ordinances and Utah law without direct supervision and exercises considerable discretion responding to specific situations in order to protect patrons and the public. Maintains general law and order, suppresses criminal activity and may physically restrain combative suspects. Testifies in court as needed and coordinates public safety activities with local law enforcement agencies. Assesses potential risk to public safety and recommends opportunities for loss prevention.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION/TRAINING
• High school diploma or equivalent plus Utah P.O.S.T. certification as a Law Enforcement Officer (Category I) as described within the limits of state statutes.
• A valid Utah Driver’s License is required.
• Must successfully pass a detailed Utah P.O.S.T. background investigation, FTA drug and alcohol screening, psychological test and polygraph test.
• Must not have been convicted of a civil or criminal offense involving dishonesty, unlawful sexual conduct, physical violence, DUI or unlawful sale or possession of a controlled substance within the past five years.
- OR -
an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. [UTA reserves the right to determine the equivalencies of education and experience.]
EXPERIENCE
Prior Police, Security, or Military experience preferred, but not required. Customer service experience either with direct public contact or at a call center is preferred. Must demonstrate superior interpersonal communication skills and be able to exercise discretion to assess and take appropriate steps to protect patrons and/or employees against potentially threatening situations including but not limited to notifying local law enforcement in accordance with UTA protocols. Officers will be required to carry a registered firearm and other duty equipment. Employment will be contingent on passing a psychological test, a polygraph test and other employment reference checks. UTA management reserves the right to re-test for suitability of employment.

All applicants will need to submit copies of your POST certificate (must have the LEO portion completed) as well as copies of your passing NPOST (National Peace Officer Selection Test) results. ALL DOCUMENTS MUST BE RECEIVED BY UTA’S HUMAN RESOURCES OFFICE NO LATER THAN 5:00 P.M. ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2013. Your online application will still need to be completed no later than the job closing date listed on page 1.
Please note the following:
• If you are currently enrolled in POST you will need to send a letter from your advisor stating that you will complete the LEO block of your POST training by the documentation deadline listed above.
• If you have an out of state certificate, you will need to contact Utah Peace Officers Standards and Training (801-256-2300) to take the challenge test and provide a copy of those results as proof of your ability to work as an officer in the state of Utah.
• If you have not already taken the NPOST, you will need to make arrangements to do so. This test is required, regardless of your prior experience. Even if you have worked for another law enforcement agency that has not required the NPOST, you will still need to take this test. The results can take up to 3 weeks to receive, so do not procrastinate. Contact information for some of the local testing sites:
