SARATOGA SPRINGS -- A standoff between police and a man in Saratoga Springs ended tragically. After hours of trying to make contact with the man, SWAT team members found his body.
The standoff began around 9 p.m. Monday and ended around 12:30 Tuesday morning when SWAT teams entered the house and found the man in the basement with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Prior to entering the house, Saratoga Springs police say they made several attempts to contact the man inside, but they say every attempt was unsuccessful.
Cpl. Aaron Rosen said, "They tried tirelessly. The negotiations team did an amazing job, and a very diligent job trying to reach him by phone, by home phone and other means."
Law enforcement was called to the house near Centennial Drive and Amanda Lane Monday night after a neighbor called police complaining of some sort of disturbance at the house.
When officers arrived, everyone in the house came out except the father, who then barricaded himself inside.
Over the next several hours, law enforcement tried to make contact with the man, even using a robot to find his location, but again, all attempts were unsuccessful.
"These men and women on the teams, whether it be tactical or negotiations team, were all disappointed, all saddened by this outcome, as was the family. Our hearts feel for them at this time," Rosen said.
Investigators are trying to piece together what led up to the fatal shooting. At this point all we know is that there was some sort of dispute between the man and his wife.
