SALT LAKE CITY — BYU is back in the Top 25 for the first time under current head coach Kalani Sitake.

After a stunning 24-21 road upset over then-No. 6 Wisconsin, the Cougars (2-1) were voted back into the Associated Press Top 25 when the voters released the latest ballot Sunday afternoon.

BYU received 75 votes in the poll, narrowly beating out Iowa (64), Boise State (62) and Duke (61) for the final spot in the official rankings.

The Badgers (2-1) fell to No. 18 nationally in the same poll. Utah, which lost to No. 10 Washington 21-7 late Saturday night, received six votes, while the Huskies stayed on the 10-line.

Local broadcaster Tony Parks of 1280 Sports, the only AP Top 25 voter in the state of Utah, revealed Sunday that at least one voter picked the Cougars as high as No. 15. His ballot included BYU at No. 24, he said, while 45 out of 61 voters did not vote for BYU after its upset of the Badgers.

It’s BYU’s first appearance in the Top 25 since 2015, when the Cougars climbed as high as No. 19 before finishing the year 9-4 with a loss to Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl.

It’s only four weeks into the regular season, but BYU has finished the season ranked in the Top 25 18 times in program history.

BYU also received 30 votes in the latest USA Today Coaches’ poll, coming in (unofficially) at No. 33. The Utes received 10 coaches’ votes, one fewer than Pac-12 foe California.

BYU returns home Saturday to host FCS foe McNeese State. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. MT on BYUtv and KSL Newsradio.
