ETNA, Box Elder County — A fire that burned 700 acres in northwestern Utah was 100 percent contained by 7:20 p.m. Sunday, fire officials said.

The fire began around 1 p.m. Saturday near Etna and spread up a hill in two directions, according to Box Elder County Economic Development Director Mitch Zundel. Winds were changing directions quickly, making the fire difficult for firefighters to contain.

The fire threatened six structures on Saturday afternoon, but fire crews were able to preserve them and implement safety measures to prevent them from catching fire.Five single-engine tankers, a heavy tanker and a helicopter were on scene fighting the blaze, Zundel said.

After initial estimates reported the fire had burned around 1,800 acres, firefighting authorities were able to collect GPS-based measures of the fire, amending their estimates back down to only 703 acres as of about 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Also in Box Elder County, a fire in Deweyville burned 5.5 acres Sunday morning.

The fire, which began around 9 a.m., burned a four-wheeled trailer, a motorcycle, two lawnmowers and a snowmobile, Zundel said.

Firefighters from the Garland, Tremonton and Fielding Fire Departments were dispatched to the Deweyville fire. By 1:30 p.m. Sunday, the fire was 100 percent contained.

The cause of both fires is still under investigation, according to Zundel.
