SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah State Board of Regents approved new degrees for Utah State University and Dixie State University at a meeting on Friday in Cedar City.

For Utah State University, the board voted unanimously to add three new degree programs:

• Bachelor of Science in technology systems with four emphases — information and computer technology; technical management; robotics, automation, and controls; and product development.

• Master's degree of data analytics with three specializations — statistics, management information systems and economics and finance.

• Doctorate of philosophy in landscape architecture.

Regent Teresa Theurer, vice chairwoman of the group's Academic and Student Affairs Committee, said the doctorate program is not a common one.

"Good for USU. They've been working on this program since 2009. They've thought about this one for a long time," she said in the meeting.

The board unanimously approved two degrees for Dixie State University, including a Bachelor of Science in population health, with emphases in health care administration and public health.

"There's great market demand for this one," Theurer said. "They had lots of students that apply for their nursing and general hygiene programs that aren't accepted. They can only accept so many. So they believe that this bachelor's will really help those students who were unable to get into those programs."

The second degree is a Bachelor of Science in recreation and sport management, with emphases in corporate recreation and wellness, experienced industry management and sports management.

The board of regents is the governing body for Utah's higher education system.

The board's major responsibilities include selecting institutional presidents, setting policy, approving programs and degrees and submitting a unified higher education budget request to the governor and state legislature.
