THE GREAT OUTDOORS — Utah is firmly in the grips of a hot summer, so escaping to cooler climates and relaxing recreation may be high on many people’s lists right now.

Camping and fishing offer the best of both worlds for many people. Utah County’s Payson Lakes, Wasatch County’s Currant Creek Reservoir and Cache County’s Tony Grove Reservoir all offer both sites for camping and fish for catching. These locations are just a few of those available throughout the state but are within a relatively close driving distance for much of the Wasatch Front's population.

Payson Lake

Since May 30, at least 5,200 9-inch rainbow trout have been stocked in Payson Lake. They are of catchable size now, and some even larger trout call the lake home, as well. To get there, take the Payson exit on I-15, then drive approximately 10 miles on Nebo Loop Road before arriving at the main lake. Several other lakes are in close proximity and also offer fishing.

Currant Creek Reservoir

Currant Creek Reservoir has a large camping area and was stocked with 15,000 3.5-inch tiger trout on May 14 and another 9,995 4 ¾-inch cutthroat trout on May 17. Again, there are larger trout in the reservoir that can offer good catches to persistent anglers.

The reservoir is located off Highway 40 and can be found after taking Forest Road 083. Currant Creek Reservoir is approximately 14 miles away along the creek itself. Fishing is available in the stream as well, but there are special regulations for artificial flies and lures, so be sure to read the signs. The reservoir is perfect for launching small boats, float tubes or kayaks for a relaxing day of fishing or just recreational purposes.

Tony Grove Reservoir

Tony Grove Reservoir was stocked on June 30 with 3,000 10-inch rainbows. The area doesn’t offer a very large camping area, but sites are generally available during the week. Located up Logan Canyon's Highway 89 on Forest Road 003, this beautiful lake is tucked alongside a mountain wall and is a cool spot for getting away from torrid valley temperatures. Albino rainbow fish can also be caught on occasion here.

Fishing methods vary, as fly anglers to bait-casters often find success on all of these waters. Powerbait is common and does well for enticing trout to cooperate on the business end of a line. Spin fishermen who like to fish a fly often use a bubble for casting purposes and to help keep their fly of choice near the surface. Small lures such as flashy spinners and spoons are also quite good for those who enjoy casting and retrieving, as opposed to bottom fishing with bait.
