SALT LAKE CITY — Hunters will have an easier time knowing when Utah’s pheasant hunt begins and ends after the Utah Wildlife Board recently approved a statewide pheasant hunt for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons.

The change was proposed by Utah Division of Wildlife Resources biologists and was approved at the Utah Wildlife Board meeting on June 1. The statewide hunt will start on the first Saturday in November and end on the first Sunday in December, wildlife officials said. The hunt will be open on both public and private land in Utah. In the past, a chance to hunt for 30 days was only available on public land and the private land hunt ended after 14 days. And in the past, even on public land, the dates have varied by county.

"This change makes the dates the same no matter where in the state you're hunting,” Utah Division of Wildlife Resources upland game coordinator Jason Robinson said in a news release. “And, because season dates on private land have been shorter in the past, the change gives those who hunt on private land more days to hunt."

The 2017 pheasant hunt will run from Nov. 4 to Dec. 3.

Two additional proposals were also approved by the Utah Wildlife Board. The first will be a new special pheasant hunt for those 17 years of age or younger and adult hunters who have never hunted pheasants before. The hunt will be held on the Pahvant and Annabella Wildlife Management Areas in southwestern Utah and both areas will be closed to all other hunters.

The special hunt will be held Nov. 11.

The second approved change is the sandhill crane hunt in Uintah County has been moved from September to October. Three different hunts will be held in October. Robinson said October is the month during the fall when the number of sandhill cranes peaks in the county, and the change will ensure that hunters have more opportunities to harvest the birds.
