Spiegel said he developed an interest in photography when he was a little kid. He has since photographed cityscapes and nature throughout the country but holds a special love for Utah scenery.

“Utah will always be one of my favorite places for the simple fact that the scenery here is so diverse,” he said.

Coming to Utah seemed to have a major effect on Spiegel’s photography as he always found time to capture some of the nation’s most beautiful countryside.

“I gained a better appreciation for the outdoors and capturing it just with my phone,” Spiegel said. “My parents noticed my knack for it and gifted me a camera for my birthday about 2 1/2 years ago and the rest is history.”

Scrolling through his Instagram page, viewers will notice that Spiegel has documented everything from trains, stairwells and protests to rivers, mountains, and the moon. He has a unique perspective that not every photographer displays, and he likes to talk about some of his techniques on getting the right shot.

There is a lot to learn in photography, but Spiegel said one of his favorite techniques is long exposure.

“I've done a lot of work with long-exposure photography initially with street photography taking pictures of trails from car lights while I was in Houston," he said. "I then applied this concept to nature when I returned to Salt Lake City, capturing moving water and starry skies. I am still green, so I feel as if my style has yet to be truly defined, but I try to experiment to find the look that I find appealing.”

Spiegel said that his favorite genre of photography is landscapes and nature photography because that’s where he got his start; however, he said he also loves cityscapes.

“In exploring new cities, I have really come to love the urban aesthetic as well,” he said.

It’s safe to say that Spiegel’s photography inspires many feelings, but it’s just a hobby — for now. He plans on graduating with his degree in chemistry and hopes to pursue neuroscience or physician assistant school.

However, when asked about his dream job, he said his “dream job would have to be being a photographer for National Geographic — taking pictures documenting the nature of how the globe is changing.”

Spiegel has currently been working as a freelance photographer while finishing school. You can check out more of his work on Instagram and on Facebook at Photography by Gabriel Spiegel.
