PROVO — Tejan Koroma, BYU football’s starting center, was named to the 2017 Rimington Trophy watchlist Monday. This is Koroma’s second time, as he was also named to the list in 2016.

The Rimington Trophy is awarded annually to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I College Football.

The 6-foot, 290-pound senior out of Allen, Texas, is on track to have a big season, as he continues to anchor the offensive line.

During his junior season, the Pro Football Focus graded him as one of the top four centers in college football. He also blocked for Jamaal Williams, who was ranked fifth nationally as a running back with 137.5 yards a game. Koroma started all 13 games and, in eight of those games, blocked for 200 or more rushing yards.

Koroma’s other achievements include the Phil Steele Postseason All-Independent First Team as a sophomore, being on the Lombardi Award watchlist as a sophomore and being named the Independent Freshman of the Year.

The Rimington Trophy committee uses three existing All-American teams — the Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News and the Football Writers Association of American — to select a winner. The center with the most first team votes will win.

The Rimington Trophy is named after Dave Rimington, who played as center for Nebraska and then for the Cincinnati Bengals. The award was first presented in 2000, after Rimington mentioned in an interview that every other position in football had an award except for center.

Rimington then went to former teammate Boomer Esiason and suggested his foundation, which supports cystic fibrosis research, sponsor the new trophy. The Rimington Trophy Committee has played a major role in raising money for the Boomer Esiason foundation while bring attention to outstanding centers on the college football field.

Other notable players on the watchlist this year include Coleman Shelton of Washington, Jake Hanson of Oregon, Scott Quessenberry of UCLA and several other centers from the PAC-12 and Mountain West conferences.
