SALT LAKE CITY — A man shot and killed by a resident during an apparent home invasion had a lengthy criminal history, according to court records.
Puleaga Danny Tupu, 33, of West Valley City, was shot and killed about 3:15 a.m. Thursday after Salt Lake City police say he and another man broke into an apartment at Park Place at City Center, 731 S. 300 East.
Three adults were inside the apartment at the time. Once inside, police say there was some sort of confrontation, and one of the adults fired multiple rounds at the home invasion suspects.
Tupu died inside the apartment. The other man was shot multiple times before running out. He was found by police outside the apartment and taken to a local hospital, where he was later upgraded from critical to serious condition. That man's name was not immediately released.
Police do not believe the home invasion was random but as of Friday had not disclosed a possible motive or connection between Tupu and the people who live in the apartment.
It was not known Friday if Tupu was armed. Police said the case was being investigated as self-defense. None of the people in the apartment had been arrested as of Friday.
