SALT LAKE CITY — Residents were made to leave their homes Monday after a gas leak forced an evacuation in the area of Roosevelt Avenue.
Residents near 800 East and between Browning and Emerson avenue — on either side of Roosevelt to the north and south — were still waiting late Monday for the gas to dissipate so they could return to their homes.
Darren Shepherd, spokesman for Questar gas, said a routine gas line check found a leak near 800 East and Roosevelt around 3:30 P.M.
Questar shut off gas to homes in the immediate area of the leak and evacuated houses for three blocks north and one block south of the leak.
The Salt Lake City Fire Department sent emergency crews to assist in evacuating some 25 homes in the area.
Shepherd said the leaks were not out of the ordinary and Questar was following a standard evacuation procedure.
Questar advised residents to find friends and family to stay with overnight, to allow time for the gas to dissipate. Shepherd said Questar would provide hotel accommodations to those who could not find a place to stay on short notice.
He said Questar would be able to repair the gas lines and allow a full return to homes in the morning.
Shepard added that with the start of spring season and more regular yard work projects, Questar customers should be advised to consult the company before digging in their yards.
