OGDEN — Rich K. Nye, a career educator and a deputy state superintendent, has been appointed superintendent of the Ogden School District.

The Ogden School Board of Education voted unanimously on Thursday to appoint Nye as the 17th superintendent of the district, which serves more than 12,000 students. He will succeed Sandy Coroles, who recently announced her retirement.

Nye has served as deputy state superintendent of student achievement for the Utah State Board of Education. He will continue to serve in that capacity until summer, when he assumes leadership of Ogden's schools.

“I am truly humbled and am inspired by the dedication of the administrators, teachers and students of the well-being of our district and community,” Nye said in a prepared statement.

Nye is the Ogden District's former director of assessment. He left that position to join the Utah State Office of Education in 2015.

He will return to Ogden "with the blessing" of State Superintendent of Public Instruction Sydnee Dickson and chairman of the Utah State Board of Education Mark Huntsman, they said in a prepared statement.

“We have all benefited from Dr. Nye’s leadership as he has gained the trust and respect of his colleagues, legislators and educators around the state. He will be greatly missed, but we celebrate with him in this new opportunity to improve outcomes for students in Ogden School District,” Dickson said.

Nye, who grew up in South Ogden, earned a master’s degree in educational administration from Arizona State University, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Weber State University and a doctor of philosophy in education from Utah State University. He has taught courses at USU in assessment, evaluation, cognition, foundations and science education.

His first teaching assignment was at a rural junior high school where he taught integrated science. Next, he taught earth and life science in an urban elementary school in Phoenix before becoming an administrator at a large affluent suburban high school.

Nye lives in the Ogden area with his wife and three children.

Jeff Heiner, president of the Ogden School District Board of Education, said he is excited for Nye to return Ogden schools because he is familiar with the district and understands its strengths and challenges.

“Dr. Nye comes back to Ogden prepared to take the district to the next level and beyond,” Heiner said.
