LOGAN — Police say 18 people were injured Tuesday in a crash involving six vehicles in Wellsville Canyon during blizzard conditions.

The pileup happened when a semitrailer struck a car that was slowing down on southbound U.S. 89 south of Logan about 3:30 p.m., causing a chain reaction that impacted four additional vehicles, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Todd Royce.

Two of those vehicles were 15-passenger vans that were at or near capacity. In all, 18 people were injured, Royce said. None of the injuries in the crash were considered life-threatening, he said.

Ten of the victims with less-serious injuries were taken to Brigham City Hospital using one of the vans affected in the crash, according to the sergeant. Five others were taken to Cache Valley Hospital and three were taken to Logan Regional Hospital.

The chain reaction occurred during a severe snowstorm, Royce said. A statement from the UHP said there was a "whiteout" in the area.

"Visibility was close to zero," Royce said.

The initial semi and another semi both jackknifed during the incident, Royce said.

Southbound U.S. 89 was closed to traffic until about 5:30 p.m. The area of the crash, while technically named Wellsville Canyon, is most commonly referred to as Sardine Canyon.
