OGDEN — Two police officers shot and killed a man who police say pointed a gun at them in a parking garage in Ogden late Tuesday.

About 11:45 p.m., two officers patrolling the parking structure at The Junction complex, 313 E. 23rd Street, came across two men "prowling around unoccupied parked vehicles," according to Ogden police. Both men ran when confronted by the officers, who called for backup.

A short time later, one of the men was spotted running in the lower level of the parking structure by responding police officers. The officers, who were riding together, got out of their patrol car to chase after him.

"As they turned the corner, the suspect drew a handgun from a holster on his hip, turned and pointed the handgun at the officers,” said Ogden Police Chief Randy Watt.

Both officers, who Watt said have been with the department for about five years, opened fire, striking and killing the man.

Bartolo Justice Sambrano, of Salt Lake City, was killed. He had just turned 25 on Tuesday.

Sambrano was wanted on several warrants out of Ogden and Idaho, according to Watt. He had also recently walked away from the Weber County Jail's work release program.

In addition, both Sambrano and the man he was with, who was arrested without incident, were wanted for questioning in connection with a home invasion robbery 10 days ago in which shots were fired.

Sambrano was sentenced to the Weber County Jail on Nov. 30 for convictions of illegal possession of a dangerous weapon, providing false information and failing to appear in court, according to court records. He was sentenced to 120 days with allowances for work release. On Dec. 9, a day after watching the work release orientation video that explained not returning to jail by 3 p.m. each day was a felony offense, Sambrano was released from jail to look for a job and never came back, court documents state.

Sambrano also had a warrant for his arrest out of Bannock County, Idaho, for burglary.

Details about how many shots were fired were not immediately released. Both Ogden police officers were placed on standard administrative leave. The department said the officers were wearing body cameras. The Weber County Homicide Task Force and the Weber County Attorney's Office will conduct investigations into the officer-involved shooting to determine whether the use of deadly force was justified.

The 20-year-old man who was with Sambrano was questioned and later released. Charges could be filed at a later time.

Police in Roy were investigating a separate fatal officer-involved shooting that also happened Tuesday night.

Updates will be posted as they become available.
