SALT LAKE CITY — The Ski Utah app has established itself in the ski community as the official snow report of Utah.

Although the app has never missed a beat on reporting when local resorts receive a significant amount of snow following a big storm, it’s lacked the ability to provide its users with feedback on how much of that fresh powder they’ve managed to ski or board on throughout the season. That’s why the app developers at Ski Utah decided it was time for an exciting update for the 2016-2017 ski season.

Ski Utah recently announced a collaboration with the team at SNOCRU, a ski and snowboard tracking app for iOS and Android devices. Their joint efforts have resulted in a major update to the Ski Utah app that integrates SNOCRU’s performance tracking capabilities with Ski Utah’s snow reporting to provide Utah skiers with the first app capable of monitoring the amount of fresh snow skied on a given season.

The update uses a new feature called the Personal Powder Counter to track the amount of fresh snow a user has skied at each resort. Once it has tracked the amount of fresh snow skied, the app provides an aggregated number for a season total. For example, if you checked in on SNOCRU at Brighton one day with 6 inches of fresh snow reported by Ski Utah, and the next weekend you made some turns at Snowbird where they had 9 inches of fresh snow, on the Ski Utah app your Personal Powder Counter would read 15 inches of fresh snow skied this season.

Although the new feature seems to be geared toward avid skiers, it might also be a solid way to encourage casual skiers to hit the slopes more frequently this season.

“With the new ability to track how much ‘fresh’ snow you have skied all season, I don’t think the casual skier is going to be able to shake the urge to ski/ride when Utah gets a healthy helping of The Greatest Snow on Earth,” Paul Marshall, Director of Communications at Ski Utah said.

Marshall also believes the app could encourage more destination skiers to Utah resorts.

“The Ski Utah app has active users from across the country and world," he said. "Being the official Utah Snow Report, destination visitors, who we like to call ‘storm chasers,’ use the app to help book their trips. While for years, skiers and riders alike have bragged about how many days they get on the mountain, but this new feature adds a whole new element that could spark a fun competition between friends, family and the ski community — how much fresh snow did you ski?”

In order to use the Personal Powder Count feature, you will need to download both the Ski Utah app and the SNOCRU app to your device. Both of these apps are free and available on both iOS and Android devices. Once you’ve got both apps, open up SNOCRU to create an account and login. Once you’re logged in, go back to Ski Utah and tap "stats" to activate the Personal Powder Count feature and you’ll be ready to start tracking the fresh powder you ski.

Following the pleasant surprise of an on-schedule open date for several resorts on Thanksgiving weekend, this new feature could serve as another pleasant surprise for Ski Utah app users when they update and open the app this season.
