WOODS CROSS — Teens usually listen to other teens. That's why Zero Fatalities has launched a teen video contest.

The winner will find their commercial airing here in Utah during the 2017 Super Bowl. Woods Cross High School has already got a jump on the contest.

"You should make up your own beats to go with the video, or make beats that other students can use, because music is such an important part, but they're not going to be able to use a pop song," digital media teacher David Pilkington told student Duncan Lutz, 17.

Duncan helps produce the Wildcat TV weekly episodes, but he said he's excited to work on a different video. He's now producing a 25-second commercial for Zero Fatalities' Zero Bowl. "I think it's a good opportunity to influence my peers and people around me to do better because sometimes, things get scary out there," Duncan said.

All videos submitted to the contest must address one or all of the five deadly driving behaviors: distracted driving, impaired driving, drowsy driving, aggressive driving and/or driving unbuckled.

Last year 25 teens lost their lives on Utah roads; this year 26 have already died. The video contest hopes to get teens talking, changing habits and reversing this trend.

"If we can get the information, the safety principles to stick in the minds of these teens longer than just while they're in driver's ed, that could have a significant impact in lowering the statistics to zero," said Woods Cross driver's education teacher Chad Lythgoe.

Lythgoe also said, the contest isn't just about statistics, it's supposed to be fun. "They are constantly filming each other in creative ways, and I'm really excited with what they would come up with cause they're just so creative," said Lythgoe.

And if you're looking for a little advice, here's what Pilkington said, "Come at it from your own perspective. Things you think are funny, things you think other teens will relate to. Use your own voice."

The winning commercial gets a coveted on-air spot that will be seen here in Utah during next year's Super Bowl. And there's another little incentive, videos submitted before Dec. 10 will receive five tickets for a private screening of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story."
