SALT LAKE CITY — A contractor installing Google fiber struck a gas line that led to an evacuation of a block in Sugar House for several hours Wednesday afternoon, fire officials said.

Fire crews responded to a report of the leak at Warnock Avenue near 1150 East shortly after 1 p.m, according to Salt Lake Fire Capt. Davin Halvorsen.

Halvorsen said a contractor was working to install Google fiber optic cables when a two-inch gas line was struck.

"A significant gas leak ensued, so it caused the fire department to meter-monitor the area and order a few evacuations in the neighborhood," Halvorsen said.

The area where the leak originated was evacuated. Crews expanded the evacuation range to Warnock Avenue from Elizabeth Street to Highland Drive just before 2 p.m.

"This is a significant leak and that's why we're doing such drastic protective measures and an abundance of caution to make sure we don't expose anyone," Halvorsen said, regarding the evacuations.

Halvorsen said nearly a dozen people had been evacuated, but officials tweeted that the line had been fixed and all evacuations had been lifted shortly after 5 p.m.
