DETROIT — Kyle Van Noy’s stay in the Motor City is finished.

The former BYU linebacker, who was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft, has been traded to the New England Patriots for a seventh-round pick, as reported Tuesday by NFL.com.

Van Noy, the No. 40 overall pick, was injured for most of his rookie season after abdominal surgery but recently found a role as a significant backup in 2015 and 2016. He finishes his tenure in Detroit with 35 tackles and one sack in just under three seasons.

“It is an honor to play in the National Football League and it’s a blessing,” Van Noy told KSL Sports earlier this month. “I’m really blessed because a lot of people want to be in my shoes and I’m grateful — very, very grateful — to be here and just continue to rep the Y., the Lions and my family.”

Alongside former BYU teammate Ziggy Ansah, the Reno, Nevada native formed the backbone of a Lions defense that also included former local standouts like defensive lineman Haloti Ngata, cornerback Nevin Lawson and defensive back Miles Killebrew — the most local college football players on any team in the NFL.

An FBS All-Independent first team selection as a senior in 2016, Van Noy finished his college career with 226 tackles, 62 tackles for loss, 26 sacks, seven interceptions and 11 forced fumbles. He played in all 52 games of his four-year BYU career, including helping the Cougars to an 8-5 record as a senior in 2013.

In New England, he joins young linebackers Jamie Collins and Dont’a Hightower, and will provide depth alongside sixth-round pick Elandon Roberts.

Van Noy was in the third season of his four-year rookie contract with the Lions.
