LEHI — A Lehi family has set a goal to get healthy — together! They joined Utah Valley Hospital's 100-day Heart Challenge, not once, but twice.

Three years ago Christy and Brandon Allfrey made a goal to get healthy and signed up for Utah Valley's Healthy Heart challenge.

"I knew it was me. I was the downfall," Christy Allfrey said. "So, I knew I needed to change before I could help them to change."

Christy Allfrey lost about 36 pounds. The Allfreys cut out sugar and caffeine, added exercise and changed the way the family of seven eats. "A lot less cream-base things or cheeses and things, and kind of lightened everything up," she said.

The key was getting her husband on board, she said. "He was doing it with me instead of me trying to have to do it solo, so I wasn't getting sabotaged," she said.

They also do "New Food Night," where everyone has to try the new food. "We try not to demonize food because food is not a demon thing. Food is fuel," she said.

Although the family is very active, old habits have crept back into their lives, that's why Brandon and Christy Allfrey signed up again for this year's Alumni Challenge with a goal of losing a few pounds, getting stronger and having fun. "To me it's the most important thing," said Brandon Allfrey. "Doing fun things help bond our family together a lot more."

The challenge started 10 years ago as a way to address poor diet and exercise in the community. Every partnership is given a trainer and a dietitian. He said, "We got a lot healthier together and made a lot of changes in what we do."

The change everyone likes are the impromptu family dance parties around the kitchen.
