SPRINGVILLE — We had plenty of drama during Week 2 of the 2016 high school football season, including a couple of games that need overtime to decide a winner.

It was hard to find more drama than Springville's double-overtime classic, hosting Lehi on Friday night.

Quarterback Jantsen Thorpe snuck into the end zone on a 1-yard run in the second overtime to help the Red Devils hold off a furious rally by the Pioneers for a 40-34 win.

Thorpe also threw for two touchdowns, including a 72-yard toss to Bennet Hullinger to open the scoring in a game the Red Devils led by as much as 27-6 on Payton Kelepolo's 8-yard TD run with five minutes left in the fourth quarter.

That should do it, right?

Not so fast. Lehi star Cammon Cooper threw for three touchdown passes, tying the game on Cooper’s 7-yard strike to Dallin Holker. Kade Moore added a pair of TD receptions.

The Pioneers converted two on-sides kicks to keep momentum in their favor. In the first overtime, Springville struck first when Thorpe connected with Jaxon Child for a 25-yard touchdown.

Cooper responded by punching it in from the 1-yard line to knot the game again and force second overtime. But it was as close as they would come before Thorpe sealed the deal.

“A win is a win, and it doesn’t matter how pretty,” Olympus safety Christian Condon told KSL Sports.

The Rams took a 3-2 lead into halftime after Cameron Keyvani booted a 39-yard field goal. The Titans got on the board first with a safety after Highland saw a wild snap sail over the punter’s head, but the Rams held Olympus’ offense scoreless through the first half.
