UP IN THE AIR — Universal truth No. 1: If you’ve gone out on any number of Utah's bodies of water by boat, you’ve likely tried tubing. Universal truth No. 2: If you’ve gone tubing, you have at least one horror story.

For me, it was when I was 14 and was being towed by a maniac driver I can only describe as having the Joker’s love of chaos and Hannibal Lecter’s lack of empathy. It resulted in what felt like 15 minutes of horrible doughnuts through choppy water that left me with whiplash and enough material that if I didn’t need a therapist before I could’ve used one then to cope with the waves of fear that continued to rack my body long after the ordeal was over.

But enough about my personal demons, this video of a 7-year-old from Stansbury Park flying out of her tube is working like exposure therapy.

Her mother, Sher Shields, passed along the clip, saying, “I thought your viewers might enjoy this 9-second video of our daughter being launched into the air by a tube earlier this week.”

We sure did, Sher.

The Sheilds family was boating July 25 at Willard Bay when the video was taken. The tube, loaded with three people, goes over an errant wave when Reagan — the 7-year-old — gets comically vaulted into the air.

Not to worry. Mom said Reagan was OK after being airborne.

“Her first words after coming up were, ‘That was awesome!!!’ She even asked if she could do it again the next day. We had to explain that might not be the safest thing to try to do ever again.”
