DUTCH JOHN, Daggett County — Police have identified the teenage girl who was killed by a lightning strike at Flaming Gorge Reservoir.

Brooklyn Reynolds, 14, died on scene after being struck while riding a personal watercraft on the reservoir Friday. Reynolds' stepmother, 49-year-old Jayleen Reynolds, was operating a Jet Ski with Brooklyn as her passenger and was also hit by the lightning strike.

Jayleen Reynolds was taken to University Hospital in critical condition but as of Wednesday was expected to recover, Daggett County sheriff's spokeswoman Susie Potter said.

A doctor who was visiting the area from Colorado treated Jayleen Reynolds before she was airlifted, which was "hugely important" to her survival, Potter added.

Brooklyn's father was riding nearby and was treated at the scene for shock, Potter said.

The family is from Utah County, according to police. At the time of the lightning strike, they were in the water adjacent to an area called Hideout Canyon Campground.

There was a storm in the area at the time of the strike, Potter said, but it was fast-moving and "there wasn’t a lot of warning with it." The storm also featured very little lightning, she said.
