MIDVALE — Police say a fatal shooting Monday may have been a case of self-defense.
Michael Anderson, 52, of Bluffdale, was shot at least once at 7940 S. State about 8:50 p.m. The alleged shooter, whose name has not yet been released, was questioned but not arrested. Unified police detective Ken Hansen described the man as being "very cooperative" with investigators.
Anderson and the gunman had been involved in an ongoing conflict, though Hansen did not know Tuesday what the dispute was about.
On Monday, Anderson went to a garage area behind a strip mall where people typically work on vehicles, Hansen said. He climbed over a wrought iron fence to enter.
Anderson confronted the man and an argument turned physical. Anderson was armed, police say. At some point, the other man apparently felt threatened and shot at Anderson with his own gun, the detective said. It was not known Tuesday how many shots were fired.
Anderson had a history of drug-related arrests, according to court records. He was most recently sentenced to up to five years at the Utah State Prison on a felony drug possession from a 2014 conviction, court records state.
