SALT LAKE CITY — Three more stories from across the sporting world:

Jousting in 2020 Olympics?

Petitions to add or drop sports in the Olympics happen frequently. For example, golf returns to the Olympics this year. However, one English organization has a proposal that caught some attention online Thursday.

A group called English Heritage began an online petition to add jousting — a popular medieval-time sport — to the Olympics in 2020, and released a promotional video.

It’s a legitimate proposal, too.

“We are being deadly serious. It is an incredible spectator sport, a really fascinating thing to watch,” one of the organization’s leaders, Lucy Hutchings, told The Guardian. “The skill of the knight and the horses make it a great thing to witness … we absolutely believe it deserves its place at the Olympic table.”

As the news organization points out, the sport was popular in the 15th and 16th centuries but has faded off for centuries since — though not completely eliminated. For example, it’s the official sport of Maryland.

It would be an interesting add to the Olympics if the petition does eventually go through.

Jimmer gets his degree

Former BYU guard Jimmer Fredette posted a photo with his new degree from BYU.

“My diploma is here! Took me a little longer than I had hoped, but still glad I finished! Officially a BYU graduate!” Fredette posted on his Facebook page.

Fredette recently competed with the Denver Nuggets Summer League team after spending last season with the New York Knicks and the Knicks’ D-League team in Westchester, New York. He’s also spent time with New Orleans, Chicago and Sacramento before that.

The guard averaged 28.9 points per game in his senior season with the Cougars and was named Naismith Player of the Year in 2011.

David Ortiz gets ball stuck in Pesky's Pole

David Ortiz has had quite a farewell season. On Thursday, he showed he’s still got power even at 40 years old.

During batting practice before a game between the Red Sox and Minnesota, Ortiz wedged a home run ball in the famous Fenway foul pole, the team tweeted out.

Ortiz continued mashing baseballs during the game, as well. Ortiz finished the night 3-of-5 from the plate with his 24th home run of the season and four RBIs in Boston’s 13-2 win over the Twins.

The slugger is batting a robust .330 with 24 homers and 79 RBIs this season.
