THE GREAT OUTDOORS — While summer is the perfect time for relaxing outdoors, it’s also the time of year when obligations seem to pile up higher than ever. While some folks are dedicated enough to consistently get out the door on adventures, many of us watch in dismay as the summer days pass by and we still haven’t gone on the trips we’d hoped to.

So here’s a reminder to carve out the time for what’s important. Make sure at least one weekend this month is spent exploring a canyon, hiking through a meadow or fishing a mountain lake.

Here’s a look at a few products that are worth considering for your next outing.

MSR Groundhog Stake Kit =======================

PRICE: $15

GRADE: A

Tent stakes can make or break a trip. If they’re high quality, your shelter will withstand foul weather and allow you to make the most of your time outdoors. If they’re weak, you may find yourself chasing your tent in a windstorm.

Unfortunately, many tents come with less-than-stellar stakes. Some are too flimsy, bending under heavy pressure. Others simply lack the bite needed to keep them anchored.

For about $15, you can get this six-pack of awesome stakes from MSR. They’re made from 7000-series aluminum and are extremely lightweight. Best of all, they hold strong under duress. So if the wind picks up, you can sleep confident that your tent won’t try to take flight.

UV Insect Shield Buff =====================

PRICE: $29

GRADE: A-

If you’ve ever watched “Survivor,” then you know what a Buff is. The tubular headwear is a staple on the show and is referenced regularly.

Of course, Buffs have more relevance than televised competitions. They’re used by anglers, hunters, hikers and many other adventurers. The UV Insect Shield Buff is a particularly innovative variation of the original Buff. It’s infused with repellent to deter mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, chiggers and no-see-ums. And it also provides protection from 95 percent of UV rays.

The 100 percent microfiber polyester fabric is light and comfy. It’s 100 percent seamless, wicks away moisture and dries quickly. The one thing to note is that while this particular line of Buffs is marketed as “one-size-fits-all,” they might be a little too snug if you’re a big guy.

Allen Sports XLZ2 Trailer/Stroller ==================================

PRICE: $399

GRADE: B+

It’s rare to find a bike trailer/stroller that looks unique. Most of the models out there appear quite similar, with the main variations being found in the caliber of their components. The XLZ2 from Allen Sports, however, is truly different.

First of all, it isn’t nearly as rounded or boxy as others on the market. Is that a good thing? Opinions of its sleek profile will probably vary, but it certainly gives it a more aerodynamic appearance.

Another distinct feature is the huge storage compartment in the rear. It’s more accessible than on some other trailers, making family outings a simpler affair. And the aluminum frame is surprisingly light, helping to keep the overall weight down. The tradeoff is that it doesn’t feel quite as rugged as you might find on a beefier trailer.

All things considered, the XLZ2 has a lot to offer. It’s a versatile bike trailer that can be quickly outfitted for two different stroller configurations. It keeps riders comfortable with its tinted windows, spacious cabin and recessed seatbacks. If only the safety straps were a little more child-friendly, this could definitely be a contender for best in its class.
