SALT LAKE CITY (CNN) — Author Stephenie Meyer is moving away from vampires and werewolves and moving into action hero territory.

It was announced Tuesday that the author of the phenomenally successful "Twilight" books has written an adult thriller.

"The Chemist" is described as a "gripping page-turner" about "an ex-agent on the run from her former employers."

"She used to work for the U.S. government, but very few people ever knew that," the press release from publisher Little, Brown and Company states. "An expert in her field, she was one of the darkest secrets of an agency so clandestine it doesn't even have a name. And when they decided she was a liability, they came for her without warning."

The young adult "Twilight" novels about a teen who falls in love with a vampire sold more than 100 million copies worldwide. The books were adapted into a successful movie franchise which launched the careers of its stars, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

In 2008, Meyer published her first novel for adults, "The Host" which debuted at the top of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller lists.

"'The Chemist' is the love child created from the union of my romantic sensibilities and my obsession with Jason Bourne/Aaron Cross," Meyer wrote in a statement. "I very much enjoyed spending time with a different kind of action hero, one whose primary weapon isn't a gun or a knife or bulging muscles, but rather her brain."

"The Chemist" is set to release on November 15.
