OGDEN — A 4-year-old boy is dead and his 28-year-old mother is in critical condition after a fire was accidentally started by the boy as he was playing with a butane torch at a home early Sunday morning, police and fire officials said.

Emergency crews from Ogden, South Ogden and Roy responded to a report of the fire at about 12:30 a.m. at 225 29th St., Ogden Police Lt. Nate Cline said.

Ogden Fire Marshal Kevin Brown said it appeared the boy was playing with a butane torch and accidentally ignited a mattress inside the basement of the home, causing the blaze.

Responding crews found "light smoke" but no fire when they arrived, but after noticing smoke in the basement, found the woman and the boy unconscious in a basement area of the home. Emergency crews performed CPR on each outside the home.

Both were transported to a local hospital, where the boy died shortly after arrival. Cline said medical examiners believe he died as a result of smoke inhalation.

The woman was listed in critical condition with severe burns, Cline added. Their names were not immediately released, pending notification of family.

Cline added more people were inside the home at the time, but no other injuries were reported. Damage to the home was estimated at $30,000.
