SALT LAKE CITY — Cinematic Pop’s orchestral rendition of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World” advanced it to the next round of “America’s Got Talent” Tuesday night.

The music group was started in Arizona by three Brigham Young University graduates — Rob Gardner and brothers Drex and McKane Davis. Their unique covers of popular songs like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Chasing Cars” drew the attention of the reality TV show’s producers, according to McKane Davis.

“It was still really fun to be in California and perform for the judges and get such an amazing response from the judges and from the crowd — the standing ovation and everything,” he said.

He said that at first Cinematic Pop was reluctant to go on the show because their regular group includes more than 100 musicians, but they eventually relented when the producers persisted. Thirty-eight of the performers took the stage, earning “yesses” from all four judges and a standing ovation from the crowd.

“So dramatic and mysterious — you actually transported me somewhere,” judge Mel B said on the show. “I absolutely loved it. I could listen to this all day long.”

All four judges were positive and expressed excitement about the project, according to McKane Davis. The group advanced to the next round of the competition.

“It was really exciting — sort of vindication for the project,” he said.

Outside of “America’s Got Talent,” Cinematic Pop is currently working on studio recordings and preparing for its first complete live show in Arizona. When tickets went on sale a few weeks ago, they sold out in three hours, according to McKane Davis. The group added a matinee show, which has “a handful” of tickets left.

Next, the group hopes to take their show on the road. McKane Davis said Utah is at the top of their list.

“What we do, you can see it in videos and get a sense for what it’s like, but experiencing it live — there’s just nothing quite like having 120 people on stage and all of that sound and talent projected to you,” he said.
