SALT LAKE CITY — A recent music video featuring a local pianist’s original song beautifully and heartbreakingly illustrates a couple’s experience before and after a rainbow baby.

Rainbow babies are classified as babies who are born after a miscarriage, stillbirth, neonatal death or infant loss, according to Kicks Count.

Some of David Motola’s friends and family members have experienced similar loss over the last few years; something Motola has been emotionally working through for quite some time, he said.

He said after he posted a popular video of him playing his infant son to sleep, many people from around the world messaged him and said it reminded them of their loss, and it brought back old feelings.

“And so that was really touching and impactful to me that somehow my music brought them to those places of … very difficult painful periods in their life, and so I decided the next video I wanted to kind of dedicate to those mothers and fathers who messaged me and in my own individual family who had been through it,” Motola said.

Motola said he wanted to somehow push against miscarriage or stillbirth being a taboo topic and create an environment where women can hopefully feel more comfortable opening up about their loss and being public about it.

“And it’s been really cool, because there’s like hundreds of comments from women all over the world there ... that are opening up about it and talking about their loss on Facebook,” he said. “It’s … really cool to see.”

Motola posted the Rainbow Baby music video to Facebook June 2, and it has since received more than 333,000 views.

In the video, a woman tells her husband she is pregnant, and they are obviously happy. After having a baby shower and decorating the nursery, the woman goes to the hospital and experiences heartbreak. The aftermath is hard to watch, but the video has a happy ending.

Recently, Motola’s niece was born a couple of years after her sister died, and their story influenced the video, according to Motola.

Motola launched a Kickstarter campaign* to raise money for a lullaby album. As of Monday afternoon, internet users had donated more than $1,000.
