TAYLORSVILLE — Cambree Hazel is something special.

Hazel allowed just three Maple Mountain hits in the seven-inning game, leading Spanish Fork to a 5-2 win for the 4A state softball championship. It's Spanish Fork's second consecutive title at the 4A level.

It wasn't always quite a sure thing, however. Spanish Fork's bats put up one run in both of the first two innings, getting out to a 2-run lead when Hazel pitched consecutive one-two-three frames in her side.

But in the third inning, the alliteratively brilliant Mickey Mills put Maple Mountain on the board with a two-run shot over the fence. All of a sudden, Spanish Fork's run-scoring prowess needed to be called upon.

And the call was immediately answered. Shortstop Gabby Beckstrom hit a single, followed by a pair of doubles from Taylor Miller and Mallory Barber that drove in two runs for the Dons. Brooke Carter's base hit drove in Barber for one more, giving the Dons their final 5-2 lead.

After that, it became a defensive duel. The pitcher/catcher partnership of Sydnie Wilson and Avery Reynolds performed well for Maple Mountain, pitching three more innings of scoreless ball, allowing only two hits.

But their Eagles teammates didn't have an answer for Hazel's pitching and the Spanish Fork defense behind her.

"The effort on the mound was there," said Spanish Fork coach Don Andrews. "I'm proud of my infield and outfield, they did some good work."

And as a result of that defensive effort, the Dons, coach and team, keep the 4A trophy in house.
