SALT LAKE CITY — While Jake Green was growing up, he looked forward to serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He was called to serve in South Carolina, but after he left he felt overwhelmed and filled with doubt. Eventually, he decided to return home before finishing the typical 2-year term and called his parents to pick him up.

“It was probably the hardest phone call I’ve ever made,” Green said in a new Mormon Channel video.

Green’s experience, which was shared in the “Returning Early from a Mission” video posted Monday, is hardly uncommon. Faced with coming home early, many missionaries report struggling with the transition.

Green said he felt like he was betraying God and repeatedly asked himself whether he made the right decision.

“I’ve come to realize since then that God does not ask us those kinds of questions,” Green said. “What God asks us is, 'How are you going to get up and move on? How are you going to become a better person? And, ‘Are you willing to let me in to help you through this process?'”

In addition to Green’s video, the Mormon Channel recently shared another message from Elder Jeffrey R. Holland on the same topic.
