SPANISH FORK — Lyndsey Valverde drove in the game-winning run from second base in the eighth inning and Bear River finished off a dramatic 2-1 win over Juab to win the Bears’ eighth Class 3A state softball title Saturday at the Spanish Fork Complex.

Dacia Hobbs drove in the game-tying run on an unintentional bunt in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring Kapri Toone to force the extra period, which placed a runner on second base per international tiebreaker rules.

Toone allowed one run on 10 hits in the Bears’ circle. The sophomore pitched a perfect game in the opening round of the playoffs, and did just enough to earn the win Saturday.

Bear River won its first state championship since winning five consecutive championships from 2008-12.
